Sorcerer's Apprentice
Rylan celebrated his 11th birthday this weekend, and while he received several nice gifts, his favorite gift came from his dance teacher. She told him that she wants him to be the sorcerer's apprentice on his school's night in the upcomming performance. He was sooo excited to be chosen out of about 50 kids. I have been impressed with all he has learned in this workshop. His confidence and his technique have really improved, he has learned 5 dances and really has them down well. I hope this hints at him getting a spot on the team for next year with the 6th graders. I am looking forward to seeing him on stage.

Way cool! What kind of dance? I can't believe he is 11 already...but mine are that age so I shouldn't be surprised. :)
It is a workshop that is put on by Ballet West, but the actual dances are more modern with a ballet influence. A large part of what they are doing is an adaptation of the Nutcracker. He wishes he were in 6th grade because those are the kids that get to do the Russian stunts, it drives him crazy that he can do the stunts so much better than any of them and he has to stand on the side and watch.
That's awesome. I have no words for how cool that is. Way to go Rylan.
We learned today that the older group, "celebration team" goes all the way to 9th grade, and then there is a chance to be an "assistant" after that. He is so excited at the possibility. He is reveling in having something all his own that he is doing well at.
Why can't they let him do the Russian stuff if he's better at it? That's silly. Good directors put their best dancers in the right places.
But bravo to the kid anyway. I'm pleased to hear all this.
I think the biggest reason is simplicity. Each group is about 40 to 50 kids with one director and 2 teenage "assistants". I am amazed at what those poor ladies accomplish. Plus for the performances they will add in all the 5th graders from 8 elementary schools, half on each night. I think they just can't handle any complications. At rehersal today Rylan found out that Adam Sklute, the artistic director for Ballet West, will be the sorcerer.
